Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to maintain, improve, and expand an internal Node.js platform that has evolved from an API proxy into a broader operational system supporting multiple business areas. You will build and maintain backend services and API integrations, improve application reliability and scalability, troubleshoot production issues, and provide React frontend support when needed. The role requires high ownership, strong self-QA discipline, and the ability to understand and improve existing systems independently in a remote environment.

What you will do

• Build, maintain, and improve backend services using Node.js;
• Develop and maintain API integrations with internal and external systems;
• Support an internal Node.js application that has grown from a proxy/API wrapper into a larger business platform;
• Improve application reliability, scalability, and maintainability;
• Investigate production issues, reduce downtime risk, and support operational stability;
• Work with existing codebases, identify improvement areas, and refactor where needed;
• Contribute to frontend web tasks using React when backend work has lower demand or when product priorities require support;
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver practical solutions;
• Own technical tasks from analysis through implementation, testing, and delivery;
• Self-test work thoroughly before QA and proactively identify edge cases, bugs, and performance risks;
• Document key technical decisions, setup steps, and implementation details when needed;
• Work with Git, deployment workflows, and development best practices to support reliable releases.

Must haves

• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience;
• Strong hands-on experience with Node.js backend development;
• Experience building and maintaining APIs, backend services, and integrations;
• Working knowledge of React for frontend web development support;
• Experience working with production applications and troubleshooting live system issues;
• Strong debugging and problem-solving skills;
• Ability to quickly understand existing systems and business logic;
• Experience improving legacy or evolving applications;
• High ownership mindset with the ability to work independently in a remote environment;
• Clear written and verbal communication skills;
• Strong attention to code quality, maintainability, and self-QA;
• Availability to work with strong timezone overlap with the team, ideally within +1 to +2 hours;
• Upper-intermediate English level.
